The
jurisdiction of high court is defined in the constitution. But, unlike
the Supreme Court, its jurisdiction extends to both judicial and
administrative matters. It is mainly because a high court is the highest
court in the province, and supervises the work of the subordinate
courts in it.
The writ jurisdiction
flows
from the constitution, while its appellate jurisdiction in civil and
criminal matters flows from the law such as the civil and criminal
procedure codes of Pakistan. We shall here confine ourselves to that
part of its jurisdiction which is conferred by the constitution.
The high court has original jurisdiction in certain matters, such as cases of the contempt of court, writs, etc.
